The series opens in 1972 Hong Kong where the close-knit Lau family are living on a modest budget. One day, the mother’s sister leaves her young son Long with the family. She asks them to care for him because she is on the run from her abusive husband. But soon trouble shows up at their doorstep in the form of Long’s father, an alcoholic criminal who violently threatens the family. In an act of desperation, the parents frame him by telling the police that he had murdered a man. The police chase after Long’s father and he jumps into the bay, disappearing without a trace. When Long learns of this, he becomes angry at the Lau family and runs away. The series moves to present day Hong Kong. The three children of the Lau family have all grown up and are happily embarking on their education and lives. However, the mother (Long’s aunt) still carries guilt and is desperate to find Long again…
