Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a young Mexican-American singer, was universally recognized as the 'Queen of Tejano,' a native American musical form combining country music, rhythm and blues, and Latin music. Often referred to as the "Mexican Madonna," she began singing with her family at 12 before enjoying a meteoric rise to international stardom. But her life was cut tragically short when her manager, in a dispute over the mishandling of Selena's investments, shot the singer in the back. Selena was just 23 years old.
Her life story was the subject of a Hollywood feature starring Jennifer Lopez and was a major landmark in Lopez's ascent to Hollywood's A list.
